Success Stories - Celebrating 35 Years

S & D Andrus Trucking

S & D Andrus Trucking

Since 1998, Stanley and Debbie Andrus have been longstanding clients of Community Futures Wild Rose (CFWR). Initially, they embarked on their journey with CFWR while managing Buffalo Jump Canyon Ranch. Over the years, we have had the privilege of accompanying them from their ranching endeavours to their present focus on the trucking aspect, as seen in their current enterprise, S & D Andrus Trucking. Continue reading to delve into their story, narrated by Debbie herself.

In 1993, Stanley and I, (Debbie), found ourselves at a crossroads after being laid off from CIBC due to reduced hours. Following career counselling, a letter suggested I explore a guest ranch vocation. During a stint at Wild Rose Business Development in Rockyford, Glenda and I were tasked with promoting tourism. In Trochu, we met Frank Vanderkley, who suggested contacting Bob Beal to advertise his trail riding and camping business. Bob, at 80 years old, welcomed us, and conversations unfolded about his ranch, which he was considering selling due to age.

After years of negotiations, nearly giving up, Bob called in 1995, urging us to make it work. We moved to the Buffalo Jump Canyon Ranch at Huxley, inheriting a herd of Yak, mules, and donkeys. In 1996, I took an Adventure Tourism course to enhance our venture. Our trail rides became a unique way to showcase Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park, fulfilling Bob's vision.

To sustain our tourism and ranching, Stanley bought a cattle liner. Community Futures Wild Rose played a crucial role in unconventional financing when banks proved challenging. As our energy waned, we concluded tourism in 2014. Stanley transitioned to hauling bales, now with two trucks.

Life's ebb and flow demanded creativity. Community Futures Wild Rose made our ranch businesses possible, offering support when traditional avenues faltered. Grateful for their assistance, we commemorate 35 years of resilience and growth. Thanks to all past collaborators—Diane, Ron, Pat, and Chantale—for contributing to our journey. Congratulations on 35 Years!
