Established in September 1986, the East Side Tae Kwon-Do Club, a not-for-profit organization based in Beiseker, operates entirely on volunteer instruction. Offering diverse classes for all ages, from Junior and Advanced Tae Kwon-Do to Junior Kickboxing and Cardio-Kickboxing. The club also caters to seniors with a Chair-Cardio program.
Originally founded in Calgary and later relocated to Beiseker in 1996, the club faced challenges accessing martial arts training locally. In response, the founder opened Beiseker's first martial arts club in 1996, growing from a shared rental space to the current #3-223 6th Street location in 2006. With over 27 years of teaching martial arts to the Beiseker community and beyond, the club boasts a current membership of nearly 50 students.
Throughout its history, the club has celebrated numerous milestones, including over 1000 students of all ages, 19 students achieving Black Belt Rank, and three Black Belt instructors earning the title of High School Valedictorians. The club's competitive students have represented Team Canada in six martial arts world championships, accumulating over 50 medals and trophies.
Sensei Gary Lloyd, head instructor and club owner, has achieved personal milestones, including winning silver at the World Karate Championships in 2012 at the age of 65 and receiving the World Martial Arts Council's 6th Degree Black Belt at the age of 76 in 2023.
Recognized as an essential service to the community by the local Lions Club and the Village of Beiseker, the club stands as a testament to its commitment to character-building and community service over its 27-year journey. With nearly 45 years of martial arts teaching experience, the owner and head instructor express hope for the continued growth and betterment of the Beiseker community through the teachings of martial arts.
In 1999, East Side Tae Kwon-Do Club became one of Community Futures Wild Rose’s valued clients. Through their dedication to the community, East Side Tae Kwon-Do Club has become an integral part of the Beiseker community and we are proud to have been able to support them.
